Charlton Invicta FC

We are an LGBT+ Football Team affiliated to Charlton Athletic Community Trust. The first formally affiliated LGBT+ Football Team. We train at Sparrows Lane – the Athletic Athletic Training Ground.

What is the goal / dream for your club?

"We breakdown barriers in football and sport around LGBT inclusion. We want to get to a point where anyone can play football in any environment. Until then continuing to take the message of LGBT+ football around the world is importance to us. We have dreams of taking Charlton Invicta FC to Hong Kong in 2022 for the Gay Games. Before then we’d love to be able to enter an Invicta Team into a main stream local league."

It is pride month so we want to know what you are most proud of about your club?

"We are proud that we get to promote LGBT inclusion and awareness on a weekly basis at a professional football club training ground. This helps to impact first team players, coaches, Club and Trust staff, the academy teams, family members, all community teams and all Charlton fans."

What makes a good teammate for your club?

"A good team mate at Invicta is someone who accepts you for the person you are no matter what your sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or ethnicity. We are all one. One Invicta Family."

Why do you think it is important for there to be LGBTIQ+ specific sports clubs/groups?

"LGBTIQ+ Football Teams are important because they offer a safe, welcoming and friendly environment to the LGBT+ community. Football is notoriously unaccepting to the LGBT+ community. Team sports we’re not welcoming when I was younger. LGBT+ football teams (and other sports teams) are bridging that gap for team sports."

Do you have an LGBTIQ+ sporting hero?

"Tom Daley is a good LGBT+ sporting hero. He shows that you can be LGBT+ in sport and be successful."

How do you think sport can benefit the LGBTIQ+ community?

"LGBT+ is a community built on inclusion and difference. That can be a huge benefit to the sporting world if they adopt the same principles and values."
