Perth Parrots Floorball Club

We train weekly at Glenearn Community Campus (pre-lockdown) every Tuesday between 1900-2000hrs.

What is the goal / dream for your club?

"We are a LGBTI inclusive floorball club and we seek to bring the LGBTI community together to participate in sport, socialise and challenge prejudice. A Team Scotland floorball team at the EuroGames would be our dream!"

It is pride month so we want to know what you are most proud of about your club?

"Our club is not quite a year old. It we have crammed a lot in within a short time. Our members are increasing, social media presence is growing And we have hosted a number of exciting community events to help mark LEAP Sports Scotland Festival Fortnight and LGBT History Month for example. Our Purple Friday event in partnership with Live Active Sport in Perth offered a taster session and our numbers attending were great."

What makes a good teammate for your club?

"The ability not to take yourself or your sport too seriously. Essentially leaving your ego at the door. For May floorball is a new sport and learning the skills necessary to play is easiest when you just have fun. Our club while still small is a great bunch who all muck in and look out for each other."

Why do you think it is important for there to be LGBTIQ+ specific sports clubs/groups?

"People migrate towards their own communities and the LGBTI community in Perth and the north of Scotland doesn’t benefit from a massive scene, vast array of LGBTI events and activities or what seems a tangible go to place... LGBTI clubs like the parrots offers a safe and welcoming safe for people to come together, enjoy sport, make new friends and own their own identity (whatever that might be)."

Do you have an LGBTIQ+ sporting hero?

"No one springs to mind"

How do you think sport can benefit the LGBTIQ+ community?

"The physical and mental health benefits associated with sport and exercise is well documented. Poor mental, self harm, thoughts of suicide etc are often common place among the LGBTI community and sport can help positively change that. Additionally strong sporting role models exist in part thanks to LGBTI sports clubs."
